Cooperative Summer Intern Program Information for Cooperative Employers

This is an opportunity for you to assist in educating one or more college students about cooperatives and at the same time get both summer help and an evaluation of a specific business operation or opportunity of interest to you.  A summer internship gives each student and your cooperative established contacts that may lead to the permanent employment of the student in your business or another cooperative.

The intern program was started in 1985. Eighty-two students and 32 cooperatives have participated in past years.

There are three sets of requirements that a student must meet to participate in the ACCC intern program.  The student will need your cooperation to complete these requirements.  The student must abide by the internship policies and procedures of three organizations, the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center, the Department of Agricultural Economics, and Career and Employment Services.  The checklist guide below is designed to help you and the student intern through this process.  Each link below will give you more specific information on each organization's policies.

Information on the K-State Career and Employment Services (CES) Experiential Learning Program.

Please note that if you don't use CES to advertise your intern position and arrange interviews you do not need to complete the "Employment Vacancy Form" in the CES Experiential Learning Program Employer Packet.  This is only for those employers working with CES.  Please contact us for this form.

You will need to work with each intern to complete two forms contained in the "Experiential Learning Program Sample Student Packet," the "Learning Objectives Agreement" and the "Employers Performance Review of Student."  The student is responsible for the completion  of the other forms found in the student packet.  Each student will pick up their own packet of CES information that includes all the forms needed or they can use the checklist guide link above to access these forms from the CES website.

We have a flexible selection process. You should offer a summer job and internship only to people of your choosing. If the requirements for our program are not met the student may not be eligible for the certification of a completed internship on the student’s transcript.

You can select which student applicants you want to interview and arrange an interview at a time and place of your choosing. We would be happy to arrange interviews for you here on campus if you want that assistance. In the past, some cooperatives have joined together and interviewed candidates jointly here on campus.

You can directly contact any K-State student you are interested in hiring without going through our office. Each year, several cooperatives arrange interviews and make hiring decisions on their own. If you and the student follow the enclosed guidelines the student is eligible for academic credit and certification on their transcript.

For each student intern you hire, please send the ACCC a copy of the Learning Objectives Agreement that you send to CES. This will serve as notification to our office that you and the student are participating in the ACCC Cooperative Summer Intern Program.

The Cooperative Summer Intern Program was initiated because of the establishment of the Arthur Capper Cooperative Center and following consultation with the ACCC Advisory Council. We appreciate the support of cooperatives in improving the educational programs of the University.

Please contact us for more information and an application packet.
